Through serial port management

Network management switch with a serial cable for the management of the use of switches. First, one end of the serial cable is inserted into the serial port on the back of the switch, and the other end is inserted into the serial port of the ordinary computer. And then switch on the computer and computer power. In Windows 98 and Windows 2000 are provided in the super terminal program. Open the super terminal, after setting the connection parameters, you can interact with the switch through the serial cable, as shown in figure 1. This approach does not occupy the bandwidth of the switch, so called "out of band management" (Out of band).

In this way, the switch provides a menu driven console interface or command line interface. You can use the "Tab" key or arrow keys to move in the menu and submenu, press the Enter key to execute the command, or use a dedicated switch management command set to manage the switch. Different brands of switch command set is different, even the same brand of switches, and its commands are also different. Use menu commands to make it easier to operate.

Through Web management

Web can be managed through the network (web browser) management, but must specify a IP address to the switch. This IP address in addition to the use of management switches, and no other use. In the default state, the switch does not have an IP address, and must be specified by a serial port or another way to specify an IP address before it can be enabled.

Use a web browser management switch, the switch is equivalent to a Web server, not just web pages stored on the hard disk, but in the switch NVRAM, the program can use NVRAM inside the Web program to upgrade. When the administrator enters the IP address of the switch in the browser, the switch sends the web page to the computer as a server, which makes you feel as if you are visiting a web site. In this way, the bandwidth of the switch is occupied, so it is called "in band management" (In band).

Through the management of network management software

SNMP can be used to follow the SNMP protocol (Simple Network Management Protocol), which is a complete set of network management standards in line with international standards. All follow the SNMP protocol equipment, can be managed through the network management software. You only need to install a set of SNMP network management software in a network management workstation, through the LAN can easily manage the network switches, routers, servers, etc.. Through the SNMP network management software interface, as shown in Figure 3, it is also an internal management.

Network management can be managed through the above three ways to manage. In what way? In the initial settings of the switch, often through the band management; set a good IP address, you can use the tape management. Because of the management data is transmitted through the public use of the LAN, remote management can be achieved, but the security is not strong. Out of band management is through the serial communication, the data is only between the switch and the management of the transfer between the machine, so the security is very strong; however, due to the length of the serial cable, remote management can not be achieved. So which way to look at your requirements for security and manageability.
